Don’t Be in the Headlines this Halloween

“Series of Accidents Dampen Halloween Activities”

“Two Killed in Head-on Crash Halloween Night”

“Drunk Driving Deadly Combo on Halloween”

“Car Crashes into Halloween Revelers and Kills Three People”

These are real headlines from past Halloweens, and they remind us of the importance of being extra cautious while driving this Halloween. With trick-or-treaters wandering the streets and people driving to and from Halloween parties, we all need to be alert and vigilant to be able to avoid accidents.

If you’re driving to a Halloween party, make sure you can move freely in your costume and you are not wearing something that obstructs your vision. You especially want to be able to hit the brake pedal without any impediment and steer quickly around anything that heads into your path.

And, of course, after the party, don’t drive impaired! If you plan to drink, choose a designated driver in advance. Also, get familiar with the BAC (blood alcohol calculator) chart so you have a clear understanding of your limits. Don’t ever think you are capable of determining if you are able to drive safely after you’ve had a drink or two. Listen to others if they question your ability to drive, and when in doubt, leave your car at the party and call a taxi or Uber. It’s better to have to go pick up your car the next day than to have an ambulance pick you up that night.

And remember, drinking isn’t the only thing that can affect your ability to drive safely. When parties last late into the night, tired party-goers are more prone to accidents too.

Even if you’re not going to a party on Halloween or driving late at night, don’t forget the added risk for accidents when trick-or-treaters are out and about. Trick-or-treating can start before the sun goes down and last long after dark, so be prepared for a group of children to walk absently in front of you or dart out from the shadows. You don’t want to get in an accident because you’re trying not to hit someone or, even worse, actually hit someone with your car. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that children ages 5 to 19 are more than twice as likely to die after being hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year. No one wants to be adding to that statistic.
