Even with less traffic on the roads, the number of car crashes in 2020 has not gone down from previous years. Are you prepared for a potential crash during COVID-19? Here are some things that could make all the difference if you do have a wreck.
- Make sure you have masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer in your car at all times. When you’ve been in a car crash, protecting yourself from the virus may be the last thing on your mind. But social distancing, wearing a mask, and using hand sanitizer are still important when you are needing to relate to others you don’t know. If you have easy access to protective gear, you’re more likely to remember to use it. And putting on that mask will also help you to remember to social distance.
- Never travel without your cellphone. You can talk to the other driver or a police officer from 6 feet away, but you can’t look at important documentation without getting close to it. If you’re going to handle someone else’s documents, you can wear gloves or use hand sanitizer immediately afterwards. Or you can each take pictures of your own documents and text them to one another. This may help you to remember to take pictures of other relevant information as well—like damage to vehicles, road conditions, etc. You can also ask the other driver to lay out paperwork on a flat surface so you can take your own pictures of it, and you can do so as well.
- Know where you will go if you need medical attention. Some hospitals and medical facilities are at capacity right now dealing with COVID cases. If you have the option to choose where to seek medical attention after a car crash, it may be helpful to know in advance which ones have plenty of space and staff available to treat you.
- Be prepared for delays and long waits—but don’t delay your self-care! Everything from receiving medical attention to communicating with the insurance companies and getting your car repaired is likely to take much longer during this time of COVID-19. It may be tempting to stay home instead of getting checked out for, or attending to, injuries. But it’s extremely important to get a medical assessment immediately after a car crash.
But don’t expect delays at our Accident and Injury Chiropractic clinics! We are still able to get you in quickly—often even the same day. You’ll get the Pro Treatment and the one-on-one attention you deserve throughout your recovery process.
