Many people erroneously believe that the fall and winter holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve, are the most dangerous for driving, but the spring and summer holidays of Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are actually the most risky. In fact, recent studies—including one by the National Safety Council (NSC)—reveal that car crashes are 4 times more likely over Memorial Day weekend. In addition, Independence Day is cited for having the highest serious crashes in a single day. The NSC analysis shows this trend holds true going back as far as 2019.According to Consumer Affairs, the main reasons for this phenomenon are the high volume of travelers and significant alcohol consumption over the spring and summer holidays.National Public Radio (NPR) refers to Memorial Day weekend as one of the busiest times of the year. Clearly, more cars on the road can lead to more accidents. In addition, this higher volume of traffic can cause drivers to feel stressed and impatient which, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), can result in more dangerous driving behaviors like speeding to make up for time lost in traffic congestion.Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends see huge spikes in impaired driving. George F. Koob, Ph.D., Director of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), discusses the increase in alcohol consumption over these spring and summer holidays.“The holiday season is filled with celebrations and gatherings with family and friends. It can also be a stressful time for many people as they get ready for the festivities...Many people may find that alcohol is more present than usual, and even people who do not usually drink alcohol may overindulge more at this time of year.
