With the government in partial shutdown and the problems with staffing TSA, flying is proving to be a real headache for many spring break travelers. If your 2026 spring break plans keep you far from the nearest airport, you may be truly counting your blessings. But there are still headaches you can face as you hit the roads for your time away. Here are some things you should consider before taking that much-needed trip. Is your car ready for that long drive? Before hitting the road, do a comprehensive check to ensure your car is road-trip ready. Long drives can exacerbate any of your car’s issues, and you don’t want to get stranded mid-trip. Check your tire pressure and tread depths, wiper blades, lights, window washer fluids, all filters, belts and hoses, and make sure your brake pads and rotors are not worn down. (For more information, see this AAA article.) And while you’re inspecting your car’s road-readiness, doublecheck your car’s emergency kit. Do you have an empty gas can, a jack and tire iron, jumper cables, a cell phone charger, a flashlight, blankets, a first-aid kit, and water? Are you prepared for all types of weather? Spring weather is notoriously unpredictable, and storms are common. For many, the warmer weather brings thunderstorms that may include strong winds and hail. But Spring can also be winter’s last gasp with frigid temperatures and storms that include snow, ice, and sleet. Many areas of the country experience both types of weather just weeks or even days apart! So, if you’re headed into possible winter weather, make sure your emergency kit also has cold weather clothing like hats, scarves, and gloves in addition to blankets. A windshield brush and scraper are a must, but also consider emergency reflectors, a portable shovel, and sand or cat litter. In addition to drinking water, pack some non-perishable food. You never know when you could be stranded and for how long! Have you planned ahead for spring break traffic? Whether you’re flying or driving, you most likely will not be able to completely avoid spring break congestion. However, there are times when the roads will be less busy, so plan your trip accordingly. Monday through Friday traffic is usually lightest mid-day; around 10 am to 3. You may also consider driving later at night, especially after 7:30 pm. However, in popular vacation spots and major metro areas, and depending on your schedule, road congestion may be unavoidable. FYI, Thursday and Friday afternoons are the worst for starting your trip while Tuesday and Sunday mornings are the best. What other preparations do you need? You’ve inspected your car, you’ve checked the weather, you’re prepared for any travel emergencies, and you’ve planned the best possible route. It’s time to make sure you and your fellow travelers are ready for the trip ahead. That means getting plenty of sleep beforehand and eating (and planning) some healthy meals, so you are rested and alert. Before beginning your drive, fill the gas tank and plan to keep it full throughout your travels. As you make your way on your journey, continue to check on traffic and be prepared to adjust your route accordingly. If possible, switch drivers often.
