TRAFFIC FATALITIES UP IN 2015
Did you know that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic fatalities were up sharply in 2015? 35,092 people died in car crashes last year—2,348 more than in 2014. This ended a 5-decade trend of declining fatalities. And this rise in fatalities was across nearly every segment of the population.
In the last 10 years, traffic deaths have been declining due to safety programs that helped encourage seat belt use and discourage impaired driving. In addition, vehicle improvements like air bags and electronic stability control contributed to fewer fatalities. But this new data has experts concerned, and the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the White House are teaming up to help determine the cause of the increase.
There are obvious things you can do to stay safer on the road. Don’t drive drunk, distracted, or drowsy. Don’t exceed the posted speed limit. And always wear your seat belt. And if you are in a car crash, don’t assume you’re ok just because you can get out of your car and walk around. Shock sets in after a crash, and you may not know if, or how seriously, you’re injured.
